The ability to construct ‘models’ of cosmology arrived with Einstein’s publication of his general theory of relativity in 1915, and the first models were created in 1917. His belief that the Universe was static and unchanging led him to introduce a quantity called the cosmological constant.
It was left to Alexander Friedmann in 1922 to discover the class of cosmological models, now known as Friedmann cosmologies, that form the basis of modern cosmology. These were models of an expanding Universe.
They were also later discovered independently by Georges Lamaitre, who recognized that they predicted an initial time when the Universe was of zero size.
